Get clearer about your next career move

You don't always need to know your ideal job first. Start by looking at what you enjoy doing, what you're good at, what gives you energy, and what you don't want to keep doing. Then look for patterns. They can tell you much more about your next direction than a job title alone.

Don't start by looking for a completely new job title. Start with what you already have: your skills, experience, interests and the problems you know how to solve. From there, explore roles and industries where those strengths can transfer. A career change doesn't always mean starting from zero.

You don't necessarily have to choose. A strong career profile often has one area of depth combined with several complementary skills. For example, a marketer might build deep expertise in product marketing while developing broader skills in data, AI and commercial strategy. The combination is often more valuable than being broadly average at everything.

Don't wait until you're looking for a job to think about your next capability. Look at where your role and industry are heading, then ask: What will become more valuable in the next 2-3 years? Build capabilities that complement your existing strengths rather than chasing every new trend.

Start with your work, not the tools. Identify which parts of your role AI is already changing, which tasks could be automated or augmented, and where human judgment still matters. Then choose skills that make you better at the work that remains, rather than simply learning another AI tool.

Being qualified and looking qualified are two different things. Recruiters need to understand quickly what you do, what you're good at and what role you're targeting. If your resume, LinkedIn profile and conversations communicate too many things at once, your experience can actually become harder to position.

Networking is most useful when you're not asking for something immediately. Instead of thinking, "Who can help me get a job?", think, "Who understands the work I want to move toward?" Conversations with people in those roles can help you understand opportunities, skills and career paths that you won't find from job descriptions alone.
